Rigor as an act of caring™

Using the Ten Common Principles as a philosophical framework, Chesapeake CES provides a wide range of services to schools in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Services are customized in response to careful analysis of school data and needs in collaboration with school leadership or school improvement teams.  Chesapeake CES works with individual schools, with clusters of schools within a district and/or region, and with school districts.

Comprehensive School Reform

Since 2002, Chesapeake CES has partnered with 15 schools (10 elementary, 2 middle, 3 high) engaged in compehensive school reform.  CSR represents our most intensive level of support for school change: 32 days of on-site coaching, technical assistance, and professional development in our base model.  At the conclusion of a CSR experience, schools undergo "affirmation," an external review by members of the Coalition of Essential Schools national network.

Smaller Learning Communities

Emphasizing rigor, relevance, relationships, and reality, Chesapeake CES provides guidance to high schools attempting to recreate themselves as smaller, more personal organizations.  Current projects include freshman academies, advisory programs, service learning project development, and responsive curricula/pedagogy.

Focus Schools Projects

Working in collaboration with school improvement teams and school/district administrators, Chesapeake CES helps schools to frame manageable, measurable improvement projects that respond to careful analysis of student achievement and other data.  Focus Schools receive 20 days of support from Chesapeake CES staff.

Professional Development Institutes and Workshops

Chesapeake CES works with a pool of consultants to collaborate, plan, and facilitate workshops and institutes for schools and districts.  Popular topics include data analysis, school improvement planning, higher order questioning, developing essential questions, differentiating/personalizing instruction, instructional planning, and project-based learning.  We work closely with school and district staff to customize professional development experiences.

MSDE Courses

Chesapeake CES offers four MSDE credit courses, working with schools and districts to design delivery structures suited to local needs.  In keeping with national and state professional development standards, each course blends new learning with classroom application and shared reflection.  Click here to upload course descriptions.

Critical Friends Group Training and Support

The National School Reform Faculty Maryland Center of Activity, a partner organization, offers introductory and advanced CFG coaches trainings in schools and districts.
